Bowling alone by robert d putnam6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Like defining works from the past, such as The Lonely Crowd and The Affluent Society, and like the works of C. ![]() Until the publication of this groundbreaking work, no one had so deftly diagnosed the harm that these broken bonds have wreaked on our physical and civic health, nor had anyone exalted their fundamental power in creating a society that is happy, healthy, and safe. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolizes a significant social change that Robert Putnam has identified in this brilliant volume, which The Economist hailed as "a prodigious achievement".ĭrawing on vast new data that reveal Americans' changing behavior, Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from one another and how social structures - whether they be PTA, church, or political parties - have disintegrated. Once we bowled in leagues, usually after work - but no longer. ![]()

The neverending story book for sale6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() So I ‘m happy with both.Ī chubby boy (unlike in the movie)-named Bastian-wanders into a small antique bookstore where he meets the mysterious owner. After seeing how different the book truly is, I understand Ende’s criticism, but had it not been for the movie, I’d have never known about the book. He unknowingly lost film rights when he signed a contract for the book, and so he didn’t have any say with how they produced it. It’s interesting to note that Michael Ende hated the movie. The first movie barely covered the first half of the book, and even though there were two other movies made, an attempt at a cartoon, and a TV series for younger children, they did not do the story justice. ![]() Not only was the book much better, it was longer, too. Let me just say that this was the beginning of my love for Michael Ende’s writings (who sadly passed away in 1995). At first I didn’t want any part of it I thought the book could never be as good as the movie, but my mother kept on insisting, so I finally broke down and read it. Many years later, my mother found this story in book format. My sixth grade teacher showed the movie “The Neverending Story” to the class one day, and ever since I’ve maintained a personal fondness for it (and for the soundtrack too). ![]()

A Forlorn Hope by Lorna Peel6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Taking the computer printout of her tour and the map – kindly drawn by Lady Heaton – out of her handbag, she set off across the now redundantly-named stable yard towards Heaton Abbey House. The estate manager occupied one flat, she was to occupy the second, and the third was still vacant. The cloisters had become stables and were now offices, while the lofts overhead had recently been converted into living accommodation. ![]() The grass had long been cobbled over and they were now covered with gravel. Leaving her boxes in the car in what had once been the abbey’s cloister garth – the grassy area around which the cloister arcades ran – she got out and took a long look around her. But is it her attraction to him or the fear of opening a Pandora’s box that makes her keep quiet about it? How long can Sophia stay at Heaton Abbey knowing what she does? When she overhears the secret surrounding his parentage, she is torn. Despite having a rule never to become involved with her boss, Sophia can’t deny how she finds him incredibly attractive. There, she meets the reclusive Thomas, Baron Heaton, a lonely workaholic. Sophia Nelson returns to her hometown in Yorkshire, England to begin a new job as tour guide at Heaton Abbey House. ![]()

Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() There are a number of rough and shallow spots and too telling. I do wish, however, that her editor had pulled her up more often. I really did enjoy that Evanovich chose to focus on a fat girl and make her the protagonist, that she develops this romance from friendship. ![]() And she has all the classic responses when he makes a move. She’s so realistic even as she fantasizes about him. I love how irritated Logan is with Natalie and how careful Holly is around him. A hefty young lady who could be pretty…”if she just lost some weight”. Still, it’s a gorgeous man who turns heads, and he falls for Holly. Of course, she is losing weight, working out with the hunkalicious Logan Montgomery, personal trainer to the elite sportsmen. Yup, a fat girl is the focus in this story. The best about this story is Evanovich’s heroine - the fat Holly Brennan. It’s cute for a debut novel and has the same humor set as her Aunt Janet. It has turned into a series, but Evanovich hasn’t come out with a name for it, so I’m calling it the Big Girl Panties, and this is the first book. Other books by this author which I have reviewed include The Sweet SpotĪ cute romance about a fat girl. Romance in Hardcover edition that was published by William Morrow on Jand has 324 pages. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I received this book for free from the library in exchange for an honest review. ![]()

Shattered sea series6/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Yarvi becomes Grandfather Yarvi and (despite Skara having leverage over him) that's a whole lot better than where he began, the book or the series. Rin loses Brand too, of course, but she and Koll are happy together and successful. As does Raith, albeit sans Rakki and Skara. She sails off into the sunset for further adventures. ![]() OK, Thorn loses Brand, and that's terrible, but by Abercrombie standards, it's not a dreadfully bad ending. At least Koll got to have the happy ending he deserved. Pretty much everyone ends up in a much worse place than when they began. I remember that I used to read plenty of YA when I was 11-12 without much problems, but I think I would have been traumatized by this ending if I had read it then. It was harder than I expected, for a book that's sold under the YA label. ![]() |
